It is time to Support Birth

If I could have done one thing differently for the births of my children, it would have been to prepare properly. Not in the ways you think though- I would not have spent more money on stuff, or purchased a new car to make baby more comfortable.

If I could have done one thing differently, I would have found the proper support team to care for me through the biggest transition in my life. I would have used all of my resources for this, instead of for stuff.  I did not know this was an option. I thought I could not afford it. I figured that since everyone else trusted the hospitals, I should too.

I had no idea how monumental this unintentional decision would be. Instead of a peaceful entry to the world, my babies were welcomed harshly and coldly. Instead of a natural and appropriate transition to motherhood, I was stuck under stark lighting and reminded that I did not know what I was doing.

When I hear stories from mothers who chose differently, my heart melts. I think of what it must be like to be supported, trusted, and encouraged; to be told “yes, you have this in you. You are doing it right now.”

I imagine how my children’s births would be different, if they had been more peaceful. I think of them entering to soft lighting and sheets. I think of them meeting me for the first time while I was confident, strong, and empowered. I imagine them resting -for hours- on my chest… learning to nurse, feeling the beat of my heart, inhaling my familiar smell. I daydream about us drifting off and waking up, and snuggling, and learning- while all of my needs were being met.

I did not choose this, but you can.

“New Mother” by Allie Chee is the resource I wish I had read. This book is not only a guide to finding a real team to support birth, it is an aid in our transition to mother.

  1. I felt the same way as you after I had my daughter. So when I became pregnant with my son, I did just that- I educated myself, and searched for every resource I could. And I was fortunate to have an amazing experience like you just described. I am passionate about sharing this with other woman, because every woman deserves to have that information available to empower them! My favorite book was Hypnobirthing It was the best resource I had and it empowered me. I was able to birth my son in a tub and pull him out, bring him to my chest and enjoy my time with him <3 http://hypnobirthing.com/

    • Beautiful Rebecca! Thank you so much for sharing that wonderful and real experience with us- it reminds us that this is not for a select few, but for all who become aware it is an option. This of course, is why we must keep speaking out and educating about supporting birth- real, honest to goodness birth… not the artificially manufactures procedure developed for profit at the expense of families.

I am so glad that you are here <3
