There are folks out there wondering whys so many of us are so upset because of something being said on television. Some people even think that Whoopi is entitled to her own opinions, and of course, with this I have to agree. Opinions and our belief in them is what keeps our society moving forward.
Yesterday however, Whoopi Goldberg did not share her opinion on “The View”. Instead she offered insults, judgement and inaccurate information. And worst of all, she offered it to new mothers. The direct insult went to those who support new mom’s, but I am pretty sure they will be okay. It is the new moms that I am worried about.
The mom who has a brand new newborn and has been clumsily trying to figure out this act that she thought would come naturally. Who has not showered or dressed or focused on anything other than breastfeeding her baby for days- not because she was made to feel like she had to, but because she knows it is best. Even though she is so unsure and filled with anxiety about her new role, deep down she knows that she can persevere and that her body and her baby will figure this out. Because she wants to.
Comments like those made yesterday are unkind. Because now, this new mom whose success is just around the corner, has received the message that 90 percent of women cannot breastfeed. And in our most tired moments statements like these can change the entire course of our lives.
What bothers me most about these “views” though, is that Whoopi tried to pretend that she was offering them up in defense of new mothers who are “already under enough pressure…with all of their hormones raging and everything..” And really she was making things much, much worse for us.
