Children Have Rights Too

As a society we perpetuate the belief that children have little thought or feeling.  This is a myth, and children have rights too.

Children have a right to eat when they are hungry, and stop when they are full.

Children have a right to choose which shoes are comfortable and which shirts make their skin itch.

Children have a right to be comforted each time they are upset.

Children have a right to know that they are loved, no matter what they have done.

Children have a right to know that they can get a hug even when they have made a mistake.

Children have a right to voice their opinions, and have their thoughts considered.

Children have a right to not be scared at bedtime.

Children have a right to know that they will never be struck.

Children have a right to explore the things that interest them.

Children have a right to learn at their own pace.

Children have a right to say they do not want to be hugged.

Children have a right to say they do not want to be kissed.

Children have a right to say they do not want to be touched.

Children have a right to say they do not want be alone with someone.

Children have a right to be apologized to when they have been wronged- especially by their parents.

Children have a right to know that they are safe; emotionally, physically, and consistently.

Children have a right to not be held to a higher standard of living than their adult counterparts.

Children have a right to communicate that they are tired, hungry, or uncomfortable; even if whining is the only way they know how.

Children have a right to take longer to get dressed, brush their teeth, and buckle their car seats.

Children have a right to decide which foods they prefer.

Children have a right to have the grown ups around them stand up for them when they are being treated poorly.

Children have a right be loved unconditionally.

Children have a right to be treated as people, because children are people.
